Supports for Success
We directly assist participants with:
- creating a detailed goal plan
- obtaining a credit report to work on improving their credit
- creating a monthly budget to increase knowledge of money management
- creating, updating, and maintaining a current professional resume to improve success in obtaining employment opportunities
- finding adequate affordable housing options
- finding employment or better employment opportunities.
Families access the services of Supports for Success through the Supports Specialist, who can be reached at 412-436-9537 or by completing this Interest Form. The Supports Specialist then provides links to appropriate services based on the individual needs of each family.
Supports for Success is funded in whole or in part under the Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) from the Federal Department of Health and Human Services under the administration of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Department of Community and Economic Development. Allegheny County Department of Human Services is the local agency which makes the CSBG funding award.

- 27 participants served
- 78.6% of participants who identified a savings goal increased their savings.
- 38.9% of participants who identified a goal to improve their credit score, increased their credit score.
- 51.6% of participants increased their financial well-being.
- 77.8% of participants obtained and/or maintained safe and affordable housing.
- 58.3% of participants obtained and/or maintained employment for 90-days.
- 66.7% of participants obtained and/or maintained employment with a living wage or higher.
- 84.6% of participants enrolled in an education training, certificate, or degree program.
2021 CAAP Progress to Self Sufficiency Award Winners from HSC Mon Valley
CAAP, the Community Action Association of Pennsylvania, bestows self-sufficiency awards recognizing the significant achievements made by the award winners. Their stories reveal not only the focused determination and momentous deeds of those who persevere in their quest to become self-sufficient, but also show how community action agencies support their journeys.
She’Cholle enrolled in the Supports for Success program in October 2019 for help with basic needs, community resources, and education and employment goals. She was motivated by her children and wanted to ensure that they were happy, secure, safe, and she was in a position to help them be successful in school and life. Through community referrals she received assistance with rent, utilities, food, furniture, and other financial assistance. She also received holiday food baskets and gifts for her children from the HSC Mon Valley. Through her participation, She’Cholle built a strong support network to assist her with her children’s health, education, and child care needs. She obtained a full-time job she truly enjoys, earned a Human Services Certificate in Child and Family Services, achieved a Bachelor’s Degree in Human Services and Youth and Family Services and Administration. Through her success in the program, She’Cholle has received a raise with benefits, increased her credit score over 140 points, and moved into her new home in November 2021.
Angelique enrolled in the Supports for Success program in April 2019 and expressed a real sense of urgency and worry about having no income to cover basic needs. Her unemployment benefits were ending, she was behind on bills, and her credit card usage was at 90%. Her primary goals were to obtain employment and improve her financial well-being. Angelique was assisted with developing a resume, job searches, submitting job applications, and job referrals. Angelique obtained employment and received work attire, gas cards to get to and from work, subsidized child care assistance, rent and utility assistance, and emergency food assistance from community partners. She developed a budget and realistic goal plan, and obtained her credit score and report to assess overall financial well-being. Angelique received ongoing budget and credit counseling, attended financial webinars, and met with financial and homeownership counselors. She worked diligently to maintain her budget, increased savings, addressed and paid off collection accounts, and improved her credit 100+ points. She saved for and purchased a reliable car in 2020, obtained a better paying job in 2021, and was preapproved for a mortgage loan and purchased her first home in June 2021.
